Public education sets the foundation
for contemporary society. Over 90% of our citizens are
educated in public schools. Across the Commonwealth
and the nation, often the largest single cost of local
government is the schools. Because public education
is such an important element of American life, many
people are interested in school reform issues.

For school reform to be effective,
citizens must take an active interest in their schools.
While parents certainly play a major role in their childrenís
education, even people without school-aged children
should pay attention to what happens in our classrooms.
Without effective schools, young people will not be
fully prepared to be successful in work and life. Without
quality schooling for all, the United States and Massachusetts
will find it increasingly difficult to find good workers
who are also responsible citizens. Without effective
education for all, the state will increasingly be divided
into two groups: those who have the quality education
needed to succeed and those who are not do not.
The Community section provides you
with school reform news and provides information such
MCAS test dates. You'll also be able to participate
in an internet forum about current education issues.
You can exchange information, ideas, and opinions with
citizens who are interested in what happens in the Commonwealth's
classrooms.
